S'poreans spend big in Malaysian mega sale

KUALA LUMPUR: MasterCard holders from Singapore were the top spenders among foreign tourists, forking out as much as US$1.11 million (S$1.53 million) over three days during the Malaysian Mega Sale Carnival on the July 5 weekend.

Singaporeans accounted for 10,524 transactions, according to a MasterCard report. Indonesian tourists spent US$625,695, Australians US$535,338, British US$378,836 and Americans US$329,519.

During the first weekend of the sale, MasterCard cardholders spent a total of US$55.4 million, up 24 per cent from US$44.6 million last year. The number of transactions also increased 5 per cent from 780,911 to 819,440.
